The Proposal
The Commission is proposing to exclude from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) those lands in Ootischenia lying east of the Columbia River.
The Commission and the Regional District of Central Kootenay reviewed the ALR in Ootischenia and toured the area.
As a result the Commission believes the area under application has no significant agricultural potential for commercial agriculture for the following reasons:
- There does not appear to be any prospect in the foreseeable future of irrigation water being made available for agricultural pursuits.
- The areas of better quality soils have been subdivided into small parcels, the majority of which have been developed for residential use, often with building locations that are not conducive to commercial agriculture.
- The predominantly Crown Land parcels to the south and north have limited agricultural potential.
- Practically no agriculture is being undertaken.
- None of the properties have farm tax assessment.
- There appears to be little interest in the community to undertake agriculture activities.
